Tech Tips: Never Put Your Laptop on Your Bed

Labels: , , , , , ,

One of the greatest benefits of using laptop over desktop computer is portability. Laptops are very portable; you can bring it and stay connected online, watch movies, finish projects, edit images or video clips wherever you are - even in your bedroom. While there's nothing wrong in bringing your precious notebook or netbook on your bed, you should be extremely cautious on where you place it before going to sleep or when going out of the room. Putting your laptop on your bed for a couple of hours without turning the power off might cause fire that would turn your home sweet home into ashes - just like what happened in a house located in the United States.

This story was shared by the Philippines National Police to give warning to those who loved to place their laptops on top of their bed for a couple of hours without turning it off.

A couple lost their 25 year old son in a fire at home on June 4th. The son who had graduated with MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison two weeks earlier had come home for a while. He had lunch with his dad at home and decided to go back to clean up his hostel room. His father told him to wait, to meet his mother, before he went back for a few days. He decided to take a nap while waiting for his mom to come back home from work. Some time later their neighbors called 911 when they saw black smoke coming out of the house. Unfortunately, the 25 years old died in the three year old house. It took several days of investigation to find out the cause of the fire. It was determined that the fire was caused by the lap top resting on the bed. When the lap top was on the bed cooling fan did not get the air to cool the computer and that is what caused the fire. He did not even wake up to get out of the bed because he died of breathing in carbon monoxide.
Bedroom stuffs such as mattresses and blankets are soft and can easily catch flame when excessive heat is applied, while laptop normally emits  heat after a couple of hours used especially if there's no cooling fan. There's a greater risk of these bed stuffs to catch fire if this "flat iron-like" laptop is placed on top of your bed.

This risk is real, let's make it a habit not to place your laptop on your bed especially when you are charging it, to avoid such incident of catching fire. Tell your parents, sons, daughters, colleagues, friends, anyone you know that has a laptop not to place their gadgets on top of their bed. If it's inevitable to use laptop on your bed, use something that will prevent your laptop having a direct contact with your blankets or mattresses, like a small table.
